Met Office issues warning for rain as Wales set to bear brunt of bad weather

The Met Office has issued a warning for heavy rain across a large parts of Wales on Sunday, with up to 100mm of rain in the worst hit areas.

The region is set to see the worst weather as an area of low pressure hits the UK.

The yellow warning, which is in place from midnight until 6pm on Sunday (February 13), said: "Heavy rain is expected across Wales on Sunday.

"This follows a wet Saturday for many with widely 40-60 mm of rain during the weekend and some spots perhaps seeing 100 mm or more."

ITV Wales weather presenter Ruth Dodsworth said: "Some rather colourful weather to come this weekend! Heavy rain and gales on Saturday. A yellow warning for even more heavy rain on Sunday."

The areas covered by the weather warning are:

  • Blaenau Gwent
  • Bridgend
  • Caerphilly
  • Carmarthenshire
  • Ceredigion
  • Merthyr Tydfil
  • Monmouthshire
  • Neath Port Talbot
  • Pembrokeshire
  • Powys
  • Rhondda Cynon Taf
  • Torfaen

Met Office Alex Deakin says: "Crisp sunshine on Friday means it like a cracker. Yes, it is cold and frosty to start with, but for most of us, it'll be blue skies for much of the day.

"There is a likelihood of some rain later on overnight and into the weekend and that brings change into the weekends with spells of wet and windy weather across the UK likely through Saturday and then another one on Sunday."

He added that areas of low pressure from the Atlantic will lead to unsettled conditions across large parts of the UK next week.

Mr Deakin said: "Most of next week and is dominated by low pressure systems and probably pretty active low pressure systems because of that strong jet stream of weather and it is likely then to be coming in from the west.

"It's also likely to be pretty mild next week. That's because our weather is being influenced by the Atlantic westerly winds keeping those temperatures above average but also bringing the moisture off the Atlantic and with deep areas of low pressure at times.

"We are also likely to see some fairly strong wind, so often wet and windy kinds of kind of sums up next week."
