Met Office issues urgent two-day nationwide weather warning as gales blast UK

The Met Office has issued an urgent two-day nationwide weather warning as the UK is blasted with gales.

This includes a 30-hour warning of very strong winds that may bring disruption.

Already this week, winds travelling over 52mph were recorded in the region

Fallen tree on Rose Lane, Mossley Hill (Andrew teebay)

Rose Lane in Mossley Hill was blocked due to a fallen tree and there are strong winds on the M6 Thelwall Viaduct between J21 A57 Manchester Road (Woolston) and J20 M56 J9 (Lymm Interchange).

There was also fallen tree on the hard shoulder of the M57 Northbound near to Junction 3 between Prescot and Huyton.

Now, the Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for wind across Merseyside and the UK.

What to expect

  • Some delays to road, rail, air and ferry transport expected
  • Coastal routes, sea fronts and coastal communities affected by spray and/or large waves
  • There is a small chance that some roads and bridges could close
  • There is a slight chance that power cuts may occur, with the potential to affect other services, such as mobile phone coverage
  • There is a slight chance of some damage to buildings, such as tiles blown from roofs

The Met Office said: "Very strong winds are likely across much of the UK later Saturday and through Sunday.

"Gusts of 50 to 60 mph are likely across many inland areas, with gusts 70, possibly 80 mph around some exposed coasts and hills, especially in the north and west.

"Heavy rain will be an additional hazard, especially over western hills.

"Winds of this strength across a wide area have the potential to produce disruption to transport, along with some coastal impacts, especially in the west."
