Met Office issues two new yellow weather warnings for Wales as snow, rain and sleet continue into the weekend

Snow, sleet and rain are forecast to continue into the weekend across Wales as winter's grip on the country shows no sign of relenting.

The Met Office has issued two new yellow weather warnings for snow and rain with the first set to begin on Thursday.

The forecaster warns that following weeks of downpours, rainfall is likely to lead to flooding for some homes and businesses.

The warning, for snow, will come into effect at midnight and last until noon.

According to the forecast, rain and hill snow will move eastward late on Wednesday evening and during the early hours of Thursday.

Snow is expected over much of inland, upland Wales - with only coastal regions excluded from the warning area.

In southern Wales, 2-5 cm of snow is likely, mainly above 200 metres, the forecasters said.

Away from the hills, rain may turn to sleet and snow for a time, but this will clear southeastwards by late morning.

Forecasters are warning that some road and railways are likely to be affected, increasing journey times for cars, buses and trains.

A second weather warning for Wales will come into effect on Friday at noon and last until 9pm on Saturday.

The area, stretching from near Colwyn Bay down to Cardiff and Swansea, is expected to receive 15-30mm of rain.

But in areas of high ground, as much as 40-60mm could fall.

Forecasters say the heaviest rain is most likely on Friday night before clearing eastward on Saturday morning.

Following days of downpours for some areas in this zone, the additional rainfall is likely to lead to flooding for some homes and businesses.

Spray and flooding on roads will likely increase journey times for motorists.

While the two weather warnings only cover a portion of the country, forecasters are predicting wintry conditions will be more widespread into the weekend.

From Friday to Sunday, the Met Office is calling for unsettled weather for the country as a whole with further spells of rain and hill snow.

Coastal gales are likely.

"There will be occasional sunny spells, but it will feel cold, especially in the breeze," according to the forecast.
