Met Office issues two new thunderstorm weather warnings for Bristol

Bristol is set to be hit by some severe thunderstorms at the start of next week.

The Met Office is predicting the week will begin with very hot and humid conditions, interspersed with heavy showers and thunder.

On Monday, June 24 there is only at most a 50 per cent chance of rain with temperatures expected to reach highs of 20 degrees.

Tuesday, June 25 looks a little more ominous with a 70 per cent chance of rain, although the heavy showers are expected to be followed by sunny spells.

The Met Office website says it's going to be 'a very warm and humid few days, with sunny spells and the risk of heavy showers developing at times', some of which will be torrential with hail and thunder.

Yellow weather warnings have been put in place to cover the entirety of Monday and Tuesday.

'Stark contrast' to the low temperatures we've had so far in June

Met Office Chief Meteorologist, Frank Saunders, said: "It’s going to feel much warmer for everyone across the UK next week.

"At the moment the highest temperatures are expected across central and southeast England, where temperatures could rise into the low 30s Celsius – depending on sunshine amounts.

"This will be in stark contrast to the low temperatures we’ve had so far this June. It’s also going to feel humid and quite muggy - especially at night time - as temperatures could remain in the high teens or low 20s Celsius in places.

"With the potential for a large volume of water in a short time, there is a significant risk of flash flooding, fast flowing or deep flowing water causing danger to life and very difficult driving conditions in places."

Why are we getting this change in weather?

For most of this month an omega blocking pattern in the north Atlantic means the UK has been stuck under an area of low pressure, bringing spells of heavy rain and thunderstorms.

Over the next few days this omega block will shift slightly, reports the Met Office, nudging the centre of the low pressure to the southwest of the UK.

This small change will allow very warm air to be drawn upwards from southern Europe and north Africa towards northern Europe, the UK and Ireland.

High temperatures are expected across parts of north-western Europe, with the possibility of near record-breaking June temperatures in countries including France, Germany and the Netherlands.
