Met Office issues snow warning covering South West as country braced for cold weekend

A new snow warning has been issued across the South West as the country braces for a chilly weekend.

The Met Office has issued the warning for snow and ice, which covers the entire of the south of England and much of the Midlands as well as all the way up the west of the UK to the peak of northern Scotland.

This country-wide warning takes effect at 4pm today (Friday, January 22) and lasts until 10.30am on Saturday (January 23).

There is also another warning only covering the south of England and Wales which warns of more snow and ice on Sunday, taking effect at 3am on Sunday morning until 6pm the same day.

The larger warning for Friday and Saturday warns of possible travel disruption across the country late on Friday and into Saturday, with the possibility of icy patches on roads and pavements.

The bulletin also predicted that "some roads and railways are likely to be affected by snowfall" throughout the period.

The more localised warning on Sunday also indicates the chance for transport disruption, stating that "a band of rain will turn readily to snow as it spreads eastwards".

Areas across the South West are expected to see a cold weekend, with temperatures across Saturday and Sunday firmly mired in the single digits.

The five-day forecast for the South West

Today:

A frosty start with sunny spells and wintry showers west of the region. Showers becoming both more widespread and heavier across the region through the afternoon as cloud thickens. Feeling cold. Maximum temperature 8 °C.

Tonight:

Showers continuing through the evening before becoming drier for most overnight under cloudy skies. Frosts likely with a risk of ice too. Feeling cold. Minimum temperature -2 °C.

Saturday:

After a frosty start most will see a dry day with plenty of sunny spells. Wintry outbreaks of rain, heavy at times, will arrive from the west overnight. Feeling cold. Maximum temperature 5 °C.

Outlook for Sunday to Tuesday:

Rain and hill snow followed by sunny spells on Sunday. Drier with sunny spells on Monday. Rain, sleet, and hill snow on Tuesday. Cold with ice and frost risks throughout.
