Met Office issues severe weather warning for wind

It feel a little gusty out there today but things are likely to get a bit windier as the day goes on.

The Met Office has issued severe weather warning for wind in the South West.

The yellow warning runs from midday today to 8pm tonight.

Motorists are being warned to that high gusty winds accompanied by heavy showery rain may cause some travel disruption.

And visitors and coastal communities are being warned to look out for large waves battering seafronts.
The area covered by the warning includes Yeovil but stops just shy of Taunton and Bruton and is mainly aimed at drivers travelling south.

It is a sign that thing could be about to get a windier across the region and comes as forecasters warn residents to prepare for four days of high tides in the Severn estuary.

Speed restrictions have been applied and taken off the M48 Severn Bridge several times over the weekend as gusts reached 42mph and there have been "off and on" closures at Aust and Chepstow.

The latest situation is that the winds have dropped below 40mph so the restrictions applied on Sunday morning have been lifted but the wind speed could increase again.

Highways England tweeted: " The lane closures have now been removed as the wind speeds have dropped below 40mph, the closures between the slips still remain at this time."

This is what the Met Office say you can expect within the yellow zone.

Some delays to road, rail, air and ferry transport are likel

Probably some bus and train services affected, with some journeys taking longe

Delays for high-sided vehicles on exposed routes and bridges likely

Some short term loss of power and other services is possible

It’s likely that some coastal routes, sea fronts and coastal communities affected by spray and/or large waves

Further north of the warning Bristol, Somerset and Gloucestershire are being warned to expect unsettled conditions as the day goes on.
