Thunderstorms are expected to hit most of the South West today (January 2), with heavy rain and winds of up to 50mph.

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for Bristol, Gloucestershire and Somerset from 12pm until 6pm.

"Intense" rain and storms are expected to drench the area, and there is a chance of lightning and hail too.

"These may be accompanied by lightning, hail and strong winds with a low risk that some places could see gusts of 50 mph."

Restrictions have already been placed on drivers trying to get across the M48 Severn Bridge going into Wales today.

Traffic monitoring website Inrix said earlier: "Strong winds and restrictions on M48 Severn Bridge Westbound at J1 A403 ( Aust ).

"Everyone comes off, around the roundabout and then back on to cross the bridge, which remains open.

"This is the usual restriction in case the bridge needs to be closed quickly if cross winds get worse."
