Met Office issues severe weather warning for ice and wintry showers

The Met Office have issued a severe weather warning as temperatures tumble.

The weather organisation has issued a yellow weather warning for ice, which comes into effect this evening in Warrington and parts of Cheshire.

People are warned that ice and "wintry showers" are possible from 7pm tonight to 10am tomorrow morning.

The warning reads: "There could be wintry showers and ice leading to some travel disruption.

"Some injuries from slips and falls on icy surfaces

"Probably some icy patches on some untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths."

Tonight temperatures will fall to lows of four degrees, with strong winds and hail showers expected in the early hours of the morning.

The forecast for tonight for the North West said: "A fair amount of cloud tonight with just a few clear breaks this evening and there will be a risk of a few wintry showers. A cold and breezy night.

"Tomorrow will be chilly and windy with sunny spells, although a few showers may push eastwards at times. Moderate to fresh westerly winds."

The outlook for the rest of the week reads: "A drier day on Wednesday, with some sunny spells and just the odd shower. Cloud will then build ahead of an area of rain pushing in later on Wednesday night, accompanied by gusty winds.

"Rain will then clear to leave it largely dry on Thursday afternoon, and becoming milder too.

"A rather mild and breezy day then looks likely on Friday, with some spells of rain."
