UK weather: Met Office issues severe warning for 60mph winds but 16-day heatwave is on way

A long-threatened severe weather warning will come into force today as ferocious gusts of up to 60mph are set to batter parts of the country.

The relentless rainfall that has marred miserable May will continue with heavy showers set to lash Britain on Thursday.

But Brits can look ahead to a reported 16-day heatwave with some predictions that the mercury is going to soar in time for the Bank Holiday weekend next week.

The Met Office warned some areas to prepare for severe gusts, while "relentless" rain will lash most of the country.

Met Office forecaster Clare Nasir said: "We are just about to embark on some wet and windy weather, strongest winds will be towards the south.

"Heaviest rain across south west Scotland, north west England as well as northern Ireland, North Wales, so all in all most of us seeing some quite tricky weather."

She added that 'this rain will be relentless' in many regions throughout the day.

Temperatures are also expected to plunge with near-zero temperatures forecast for early Thursday, particularly in the north east.

The yellow weather warning in place for wind predicts gusts of up to 60mph on the south and south east coastal regions of England, as well as in south Wales.

Forecasters said those in the affected areas should prepare for 'damaging conditions' as well as travel chaos.

That warning is in force from 6pm until 9pm on Friday.

For this weekend the Met Office said that conditions would be more settled on Saturday but yet more rain would strike on Sunday.

While the country suffers the miserable weather the last bank holiday in May is expected to see soaring temperatures and a mini-heatwave.

Bank Holiday Monday on May 31 is forecast to see blistering highs of 20C with temperatures expected to return to warmer climates from next week.

In London, the June forecast predicts that temperatures will hit at least 20C for 16 consecutive days, MyLondon reports.

Gales, possibly severe, affecting some southwestern coastal areas, with strong winds inland across the south. Further rain at times for most areas, heavy in places. Less chilly than preceding night.

A few brighter interludes but the emphasis on cloud, wind and spells of rain, heavy in a few areas, especially over hills in the southwest and northeast. Feeling distinctly cool.

Outlook for Saturday to Monday:
