Met Office issues Scotland thunderstorm warning with 10 hours of rain and lighting

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for thunderstorms in Scotland this week just days after a mini heatwave.

Torrential rain, lightning and flooding is expected across most of Scotland on Thursday as storms roll in across the UK.

Forecasters predict heavy showers will batter the country tomorrow from 10am until 8pm after the weather warning was extended to cover Scotland.

Up to 40mm of rain is expected to lash down in just two hours, with all areas of Scotland to be affected by the severe weather.

The thunderstorm will come just one day after temperatures are predicted to soar to 28C in one of the hottest Septembers Scotland has ever seen.

The Met Office forecast reads: "Following overnight rain and showers, more intense showers and thunderstorms are expected to break out fairly widely from late-morning, before easing during the evening.

"Whilst many areas will miss the most intense storms, torrential downpours are likely in a few places.

"Where these occur, there is potential for 20 to 30 mm of rain in less than an hour and up to 40 mm in 2 hours.

"This will have the potential to generate surface water flooding, especially if it falls over an urban area."

It comes after the Met Office is predicting temperatures could rise above 28C in some areas on Wednesday thanks to a band of high pressure - giving clear, sunny skies for much of the day.

The Met Office forecast says: "A fine dry day with long sunny spells and becoming very warm or hot.

"It could be the hottest September day in Scotland for over 100 years, with September temperatures last reaching more than 28 Celsius away back in 1906. Maximum temperature 28C".
