Met Office issues new yellow weather warning for snow in Wales

A yellow weather warning for snow and ice has been issued for Wales as bitter cold remains entrenched across the country.

Temperatures on Thursday morning marked some of the coldest of the winter, with readings of -6C in Snowdonia and -3C in Cardiff.

The frigid air will continue to grip Wales into Friday, allowing for a mixture of rain, sleet and snow to fall across the country.

A snow and ice warning is due to come into force at 5pm on Thursday, January 7 and remain in place for the duration of Friday, January 8.

During that time, forecasters are predicting a mixture of rain, sleet and snow to fall across the country, leading to icy stretches on pavements and roadways.

A more persistent spell of rain and hill snow is also likely to move south across north Wales during Thursday evening before moving into southeast Wales on Friday, the forecast says.

Accumulations are most likely over the high ground of Wales, with just shy of one inch (2.5cm) possible.

"Elsewhere, whilst some snowfall is possible, accumulations are likely to be slight and temporary," the Met Office said.

On Thursday evening and throughout Friday, motorists should prepare for slippery and icy conditions on roads as well as freezing fog patches, which could reduce visibility to less than 100m at times.

Untreated pavements and cycle paths may also be hazardous.

Anyone heading outdoors will want to wrap up, as temperatures are set to remain from -3C to 2C for most overnight on Thursday and Friday.
