Met Office issues new thunderstorm warning across Wales

A thunderstorm warning that covers most of Wales has been issued by the Met Office. The warning is in place for a nine-hour period starting on Monday afternoon.

The forecasting service has said that scattered thunderstorms will develop on Monday afternoon bringing some disruption to travel in places. Forecasters have warned that despite it being warm this week, with temperatures above normal, the weather is set to be "volatile".

It is the second thunderstorm warning in two days for parts of Wales, but this one covers a larger part of the country. The warning, which is in place from 1pm to 10pm on Monday (May 16), says: "During Monday afternoon thunderstorms are likely to develop over parts of Wales and the Midlands before moving northwards into northern England and develop over Northern Ireland.

"These are likely to bring some heavy rain to places with 20 mm of rain possible in 1-2 hours but also the risk of hail and thunder. The thunderstorms will clear from the south during the afternoon then die out altogether into the evening."

The areas covered by the warning are:

  • Blaenau Gwent
  • Caerphilly
  • Carmarthenshire
  • Ceredigion
  • Conwy
  • Denbighshire
  • Flintshire
  • Gwynedd
  • Isle of Anglesey
  • Merthyr Tydfil
  • Monmouthshire
  • Powys
  • Rhondda Cynon Taf
  • Torfaen
  • Wrexham.

BBC weather forecaster Tomasz Schafernacker says that the forecast for this week is "very hard to predict" because the weather throughout the week will be "volatile". He explained: "Often this time of the year storms from across Siberia, the near continent they get shunted in our direction by the jet stream and that's actually something really difficult to predict, so we are probably going to [get] a lot of complaints out there that we're not gonna get the forecast right but actually, we are doing our best. The areas of rain thundery rain tend to form very quickly and then dissipate and then reform in other areas as well."

The forecaster added that it does look more settled towards the weekend. To get news from across Wales straight to your inbox, subscribe to our newsletters here.
