Met Office issues long-range forecast with 'wintry showers' forecast to hit the North West in January

The Met Office has warned of "unsettled conditions" in January with temperatures "colder than average".

Currently, the bomb cyclone that has sent temperatures plunging in the US is also causing the UK to experience wet and windy weather.

On Wednesday, heavy rain brought some flooding and travel disruption. Meteorologist Simon Partridge said: "The UK weather is going to remain unsettled with further spells of wet and windy weather due to the strengthening of the jet stream because of the weather in the US."

He said the impact on the UK would be "nowhere near" as significant as it was on the US. Mr Patridge added: "The effect it's having on the UK is nowhere near as dramatic because that system has brought up a lot of cold air further south, across the US."

However, in an equally grim forecast, the Met Office spoke of wet and windy weather in January.

Weather forecast for January 3 to January 12

The Met Office said: "The start of the period is likely to see a northwest-southeast split with unsettled conditions persisting across the northwest, and a period of more settled conditions for the south and southeast. Some early morning frost or fog patches are possible, with temperatures perhaps rather colder than average.

"Further into January, there remains some uncertainty regarding the extent of unsettled conditions in the southeast, but further rainfall and strong winds are likely for the northwest, where showers may turn wintry to lower levels at times.

"The southeast is likely to continue to see the driest conditions with temperatures around average, but some stronger winds remain possible, as well as occasional rain, mainly in the west. Temperatures around average, but more changeable in northern parts, with some milder and colder spells."

Weather forecast for January 13 to January 27

The Met Office said: "Confidence remains low into January, although the most likely scenario is for changeable weather to continue. In the south, more settled conditions are possible with northern parts seeing the wettest and windiest weather.

"Brief colder spells may develop, bringing a risk of frost and snow, however milder conditions are likely to be more prevalent."
