Met Office issues immediate thunderstorm weather warning for Merseyside

The Met Office issued an immediate weather warning for thunderstorms in the region this afternoon.

Merseyside is included in the area covered by the yellow weather warning, which includes a large swathe of the north-west region and North Wales.

It warns that some heavy showers and thunderstorms could disrupt travel and power in a few places.

The Met Office also issued warnings that

  • Some damage to a few buildings and structures from lightning strikes is possible
  • There is a good chance driving conditions will be affected by spray, standing water and/or hail, leading to longer journey times by car and bus
  • Some short term loss of power and other services is likely
  • There is a small chance of some flooding of a few homes and businesses.

The yellow weather warning is in force until 7pm this evening.

After that, the Met Office forecasts that most showers will ease by late evening, leaving largely dry weather overnight with clear spells.

Sunday is forecast to be a dry day for many with some good spells of sunshine but also some heavy showers and a rumble of thunder possible. Temperatures could reach as high as 24°C.

The next few days after that will see showers, these often heavy with the risk of thunder at times, interspersed with drier and sunny spells. Light winds and warm in any sunshine.
