Met Office issues heat alert as temperatures set to soar this week

The Met Office has issues a series of 'heat alerts' ahead of the expected hot weather later this week.

Yesterday we reported that temperatures in Liverpool are due to soar as European forecasters warn "hell is coming".

Now the weather experts have told the public to prepare for high levels of humidity - over 80% in places - as the mercury levels rise.

Luckily at the moment, Merseyside is currently on Level 1 which is the "minimum state of vigilance during the summer".

This is standard for most summers and is usually automatically put in place from June 1 until September 15.

But if you are thinking of venturing a little south at the weekend, the Met Office has put it up to Level 2.

Level 2 alerts have been issued by the Met Office (Met Office)

The Met Office said: "There is a 70% probability of heat health criteria being met between 0600 on Thursday and 1800 on Saturday in parts of England.

"Very warm or hot conditions are expected in the west of the country over the next few days, with these warmer conditions moving eastwards into the weekend.

"Cooler conditions are then expected from Sunday onwards. Trigger criteria are most likely to be met in southern areas between Friday and Saturday."

That doesn't mean Liverpool and the surrounding areas will escape the high temperatures.

Humidity levels on Friday and Saturday will hit 84% as temperatures soar to 24°C in places.

Pollen counts will be extremely high as will the UV levels, meaning sun cream will need to be applied more frequently.

The hottest parts of the days will be between 1 and 4pm.

Sunday will feel cooler, thanks to a slight westerly breeze and they will continue to cool heading into the first week of July.

The rest of Europe is preparing for a very difficult week ahead.

In Spain, TV meteorologist for RTVE, Silvia Laplana said: "El infierno (hell) is coming."

By Thursday, forecasters believe it could reach 42 degrees C in some Spanish regions, posing an "extreme risk" of forest fires.

Across the continent, exams have been postponed for 800,000 schoolchildren in France because of the extreme temperatures.

Water breaks may have to be introduced at the Women's World Cup in France, and some reports even say games could be under threat due to the weather.

Spanish weather agency Aemet says temperatures will top 35C across the country, but it could reach 42C in the valleys of Ebro, Tajo, Guadiana and Guadalquivir.

And Berlin will sizzle at 38C on Thursday, forecasters in Germany predict, with the rest of the country set to experience temperatures in the mid-30s.
