Met Office issues further weather warning for ice as temperatures due to drop below freezing

Frost is expected to cover the ground again as temperatures dip below zero tonight.

Wintry showers, including a chance of some snow, are expected in rural areas of the North East on Monday night into Tuesday morning.

A yellow weather warning is in place across western Northumberland and County Durham between 7pm on Monday and 10am on Tuesday.

The Met Office has said that those in the warning area at at risk of slips and falls on icy surfaces.

Icy patches are expected to form on untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths.

Showers of rain, hail and sleet are likely to fall overnight in the warning area, leading to a risk of ice on some surfaces as temperatures fall below freezing.

The forecaster says some snow is also possible, but will be mostly restricted to high ground above 200 metres where a few centimetres may settle.

A yellow weather warning for ice covering the whole of the North East was in place overnight on Sunday and Monday, and ended at 10am.

Tonight is expected to be the coldest night of winter so far with temperatures falling down to -3C in hilly areas including the Cheviots in Northumberland.

Luckily, the wintry weather is set to be a "short sharp cold spell" over two days before milder weather moves in on Wednesday.
