Met Office issues fresh weather warning for heavy rain and strong wind across whole of Wales

The Met Office has issued a fresh yellow warning for wind and rain across Wales, the third weather warning this week. The country has already been battered by heavy downpours and strong winds this week, and it looks like there's more to come.

The forecasting service has issued a yellow warning for rain and wind for the entire country on Thursday, November 24. It comes after torrential rain and high winds left some areas flooded on Monday, as well as a warning for wind and rain for Wednesday.

The warning for Thursday, which is in place from 10am to 7pm, said: "A narrow band of rain, heavy at times and perhaps briefly intense, will move eastwards late on Thursday morning and into the afternoon, clearing Kent during the evening. 10 to 15 mm is likely to fall in a 1 to 2 hour period, with around 20 mm in a few places.

"With saturated ground, this is likely to lead to a fair amount of surface water on roads and flooding in one or two places. Strong winds will be an additional hazard with gusts of 40-50 mph inland and perhaps briefly 60-70 mph along some exposed coasts, especially in Cornwall, Pembrokeshire, Gwynedd and Anglesey."

The areas covered by Wednesday's warning are:

  • Blaenau Gwent
  • Bridgend
  • Caerphilly
  • Cardiff
  • Carmarthenshire
  • Ceredigion
  • Conwy
  • Denbighshire
  • Flintshire
  • Gwynedd
  • Isle of Anglesey
  • Merthyr Tydfil
  • Monmouthshire
  • Neath Port Talbot
  • Newport
  • Pembrokeshire
  • Powys
  • Rhondda Cynon Taf
  • Swansea
  • Torfaen
  • Vale of Glamorgan
  • Wrexham

The whole of Wales is included in the warning (Met Office)

The Met Office forecast for Thursday, November 24 says: "A largely dry start before a squally band of rain crosses the area from the west, followed by scattered showers and sunny spells. Strong winds throughout the day, easing later. Maximum temperature 13 °C."

Unfortunately the wintery weather looks set to be here for a few more days at least, with sunshine and dry skies not expected until the tail end of the weekend. The Met Office forecast for Friday to Sunday reads: "Showers first thing on Friday then feeling pleasant with plenty of sunshine and light winds. Cloudy with heavy rain and strong winds on Saturday. Drier and brighter on Sunday."
