Met Office issues fresh weather warning as 20mm of rain forecast in a day

The Met Office has updated its yellow weather warning for the North East.

The warning for heavy rain was issued on Monday and affects all areas of the region including Newcastle , Northumberland, Gateshead, Durham and Sunderland as well as North and South Tyneside.

The time of the warning has been adjusted and will now be in place from 9am on Wednesday to 6am on Thursday.

Persistent rain will batter most of the UK this week and there are several more severe flood warnings in place for further south.

The warning reads: "Rain is expected to become more persistent during Wednesday and turn heavy at times. Many areas are likely to receive 10-20mm of rain, with a few locations over higher parts of the North Yorkshire Moors perhaps seeing 20-40 mm.

"The location of the heaviest and most persistent rainfall is still somewhat uncertain."

  • Flooding of a few homes and businesses is possible
  • Bus and train services probably affected with journey times taking longer
  • Spray and flooding on roads probably making journey times longer
