Met Office issues another weather warning for snow and ice

The Met Office has issued another weather warning for later this week.

Forecasters said snow and ice will hit Merseyside and a yellow weather warning will be in place between Thursday at 8pm and Friday at 11am.

The Met Office said frequent sleet, hail and snow showers may lead to some travel disruption during Thursday and Friday morning.

It appears snow will predominantly fall across Knowsley, Sefton and St Helens.

The news comes as the UK has been hit by an Arctic blast which has resulted in sub-zero conditions sweeping across the country.

A spokesperson for the Met Office said: "Frequent wintry showers arriving from the west during Thursday evening and overnight are likely to lead to a fresh covering of snow for areas above 200m (mainly around 2-5 cm, possibly as much as 10 cm over highest ground where showers are most frequent).

"Falling snow below this level may cause some temporary slushy accumulations which then may freeze and cause dangerous, icy patches where skies remain clear for long enough.

"Winds will be gusty around heavier showers and there is also a risk of lightning strikes from isolated thunderstorms in some coastal districts."

The forecasting agency said people can expect road and rail disruptions, icy patches, power outages and possible injuries.

It said: "What to expect: Some roads and railways likely to be affected with longer journey times by road, bus and train services.

"Probably some icy patches on some untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths

"Some brief power outages are possible with a risk of isolated lightning strikes.

"Some injuries from slips and falls on icy surfaces."

The warnings come as the UK is braced for temperatures as low as -10C over the coming days after a mild end to 2021.

Met Office's Clare Nasir told the Mirror : "We will see the temperatures fall very quickly so expect a widespread frost, temperatures plummeting, values in -3C, -4 C in England and Wales and in the snow fields of Scotland down to maybe -10C."
