Met Office issues another snow and ice warning for Greater Manchester

There could be more snow arriving in Greater Manchester this evening.

The white stuff has already caused traffic problems on the M62, as well as in Rochdale, the High Peak and Oldham areas this morning.

And now the Met Office have issued another yellow weather alert warning there could be more to come.

The snow and ice warning covers the entire region, as well as Cheshire, Cumbria, Lancashire and Merseyside.

It is in place from 8pm on Tuesday evening until 10am tomorrow morning.

Forecasters have said to expect wintry showers on Tuesday night, into Wednesday morning.

The showers will fall as a mixture of rain, hail and snow, however snow is most likely to fall in hilly areas.

Some parts of Greater Manchester could see 1-3cm of snow, mainly in areas above 200m.

However, forecasters have said 4-8cm is possible in higher areas.

As a result ice could develop on some untreated surfaces, causing treacherous driving conditions.

However, by Wednesday afternoon the wintry showers are likely to become less frequent.

Overnight temperatures will dip to freezing point, while during the day on Wednesday there will be highs of 8C.

Forecasters are warning the ice could cause delays for drivers and public transport users.

A statement from the Met Office said: "Wintry showers are expected to continue through Tuesday night and Wednesday morning leaving surfaces wet and leading to icy stretches developing on untreated surfaces.

"These showers will fall as a mixture of rain, hail and snow at times, the snow mostly over higher ground.

"Some places are likely to see 1-3 cm of snow, mainly above 200 m, with 4-8 cm possible over the higher ground in northwest England, Wales and west Scotland."
