UK heatwave: Met Office issues amber extreme heat weather warning as temperatures set to reach mid-30s

  • The Met Office has issued an amber weather warning for extreme heat across the south west, south east, and east of England, and parts of south Wales, effective from Monday until Tuesday.
  • Temperatures could potentially reach the mid-thirties next week, with some areas potentially experiencing “tropical nights” where temperatures remain above 20C overnight.
  • The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has also issued yellow and amber heat health alerts for swathes of England, warning of “significant impacts” on health and social care services.
  • The Met Office has said the heat poses risks including increased water safety incidents, “adverse health effects” for vulnerable people, travel delays and potential power cuts.
  • This follows a warning from the Climate Change Committee that 92 per cent of UK homes could overheat by 2050.
