Met Office issues 9-hour alert for thunderstorms today - see list of areas

Thunderstorms are set to strike across Britain today with the Met Office issuing multiple alerts spanning nine hours.

Heavy showers and crackling thunder are expected in parts of Scotland, England and Northern Ireland from midday, lasting into the evening, with flooding and power cuts a possibility for some.

The three alerts will remain in place until 9pm.

Travel delays, including to trains and buses, are likely in impacted areas, and some communities could find themselves cut off, the national weather agency said.

Forecasters have warned some places could see up to three inches of rain and for many temperatures will remain in the teens - well below the usual for August.

It comes after another wash out weekend saw more cars left stranded and properties falling victim to flash floods as the wet summer continues.

Thunderstorm warnings were in place yesterday for all of Northern Ireland, a huge area of northern and central England, almost the whole of Scotland and part of north Wales.

That warning - the first to be issued this morning - stretches from Montrose across to Stirling and Glasgow and down to Dumfries.

Meteorologist Craig Snell said: "For a lot of the UK [on Monday] it will be like what we have seen over the weekend - plenty of showers around and some of those showers will be heavy."

However, Brits must only endure the unseasonal downpours until Wednesday when things are due to settle and temperatures shoot up to 24C.

Met Office forecaster Dan Stroud told The Mirror yesterday: "The next couple of days will be a bit of a mixed bag, with showers and the risk of thunderstorms in some parts of country.

"We are seeing a change coming down the line on Tuesday and into Wednesday.

"High pressure will kill off the showers, although there will still be some isolated ones around."
