Met Office issues 48-hour heavy snow and blizzard warning

The Met Office has issued new weather warnings for heavy snow and high winds set to hit parts of the UK next week.

Up to 10cm of snow will fall and winds will hit 60mph with a warning there could also be lightning.

Warnings were already in place for high winds and heavy rain set to hit on Saturday evening and last through Sunday as Storm Ciara makes landfall in the UK.

Now there will be two more days of high winds - as well as heavy snow on Monday and Tuesday.

The new warnings cover most of Scotland and Northern Ireland.

They come into force at midnight on Monday morning.

The forecast shows snow falling on high ground as far south as Devon.

The warnings read: "Frequent and heavy snow showers will affect the region throughout Monday and at first on Tuesday.

"Snow showers will mainly be over high ground. Slight accumulations of 1 to 3 cm above 150 metres and 5-10 cm above 300 metres.

"Strong winds, gusting 50-60 mph, will lead to blizzard conditions at times and considerable drifting of lying snow. Frequent lightning strikes are also possible, perhaps leading to interruptions to power supplies."

The warnings will stay in place until 12pm on Tuesday.
