The Met Office weather warning said: "There is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater.

"Spray and sudden flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures.

"Where flooding or lightning strikes occur, there is a chance of delays and some cancellations to train and bus services."

The forecast for Liverpool this week shows sunny intervals and cloud before the rain and thunder moves in on Friday.

The forecast for the North West said: "Turning unsettled with widespread showers on Thursday. Persistent heavy, possibly thundery showers remain throughout Friday. Saturday will be a widely showery day."
