Met Office issues 12-hour weather warning for torrential rain and thunder for Leeds

An urgent weather warning has been issued for Leeds as torrential rain and thunder is expected to hit the city on Sunday.

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for Leeds in a 12-hour alert.

The warning from the Met Office starts at noon on Sunday and last until just before midnight with some areas predicted to suffer up to 40mm of rainfall.

A spokesperson for the Met Office said: "A band of rain and heavy, thundery showers will slowly drift east through Sunday before becoming slow moving over the highlighted area later in the day.

"Where these showers become slow moving, 30 to 40 mm of rain could fall in a relatively short time leading to surface water flooding and transport disruption."

There is a chance that the downpours could cause some localised flooding and dangerous conditions on the roads for those out and about.

It will be a sharp contrast from the hot temperatures experienced on Saturday as it is expected to cool off with highs of around 17C during the day.

Sunday

Perhaps starting fine with bright spells in eastern parts after early fog patches clear. However, rain in the west will soon spread eastwards, with some slow-moving heavy downpours developing later. Maximum temperature 21 °C.

Monday to Wednesday

Becoming drier and brighter on Monday, continuing into Tuesday, but with winds gradually picking up. Generally breezy on Wednesday, with a spell of rain followed by showers. Temperatures falling slightly.
