Met Office issue yellow warning for thunderstorms in Wales

The late blast of summer looks set to come to an end with a bang as the Met Office has issued a warning of thunderstorms.

Temperatures are expected to reach highs of 28C in Wales on Tuesday, but the forecasting service is warning of "intense showers and thunderstorms" by the end of the week.

Yellow warnings were issued that will affect southern parts of Wales on Wednesday and most parts of the country on Thursday.

BBC Wales weather presenter Sue Charles says: "Wednesday will start warm and sunny, especially in the north, but it will cloud over from the south west during the day.

"We have got a low pressure system moving in, and that signals the end to the fine weather. We got a risk of thundery showers later on Wednesday, overnight into Thursday, and then the rain remains at times, on and off, through the rest of the week."

Forecasters warn there could be as much as 40mm in two hours in certain places.

The Wednesday warning:

(Met Office)

It is in place from 11am to 9pm.

The warning states: "An area of showers will move northwards across southwest England and south Wales on Wednesday. Whilst many areas will see little rainfall there is the chance of some heavy and thundery downpours developing, particularly late in the afternoon.

"Where these occur 30-50 mm of rain could fall in less than 3 hours though only a few spots would likely see these totals. Lightning may also be a hazard during the day."

The areas covered by this warning are: Blaenau Gwent, Bridgend, Caerphilly, Cardiff, Carmarthenshire, Merthyr Tydfil, Monmouthshire, Neath Port Talbot, Newport, Pembrokeshire, Rhondda Cynon Taf, Swansea, Torfaen, Vale of Glamorgan.

The Thursday warning:

(Met Office)

It is in place from 11am to 8pm.

The warning states: "Following overnight rain and showers, more intense showers and thunderstorms are expected to break out fairly widely from late-morning, before easing during the evening.

"Whilst most areas will miss the most intense storms, torrential downpours are possible in a few places. Where these occur, there is potential for 20 to 30mm of rain in less than an hour and up to 40mm in two hours. This would have the potential to generate surface water flooding, especially if it falls over an urban area."

The Met Office outlook for Wales towards the end of the week says: "Scattered showers on Thursday, heavy at times and with a risk of thunder. Further showers possible on Friday. Many areas dry on Saturday but a few showers are still possible."
