Met Office issue weather warnings as freezing temperatures to grip UK

Weather warnings for ice have been issued in parts of the UK as freezing temperatures grip the country.

Wintry showers will lead to icy conditions on Wednesday night and into Thursday, the Met Office has said.

The yellow weather warnings are in place for Scotland, the east coast including Skegness and parts of Lincolnshire and the south west of England.

They come into force from 10pm on Wednesday night December 1 lasting until around 10am on Thursday.

On what to expect, the Met Office added: "Some injuries from slips and falls on icy surfaces.

"Probably some icy patches on some untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths.

"Some roads and railways likely to be affected by ice and perhaps snow, resulting in longer journey times."

In Nottingham, temperatures will drop to 1C overnight but there are no weather warnings at this stage.

Due to wind chill, conditions will feel like -4C overnight and on Thursday they won't get above 4C.

Here is the latest forecast from the Met Office for the East Midlands:

Today (December 1)

Mainly dry and bright to start, but rather windy. Cloudier with an increased chance of showers or a longer period of rain late morning and early afternoon. Drier later and less windy, though some showers still affecting parts of Lincolnshire. Maximum temperature 8 °C.

Tonight:

Mostly clear skies overnight leading to a rather widespread frost. Showers affecting the Lincolnshire coast, these increasingly turning to sleet or snow at low levels. Remaining breezy. Minimum temperature -1 °C.

Thursday:

Bright or sunny periods in the west and likely remaining dry. Cloudier further east. Some wintry showers near coasts, mainly early morning. Brisk winds at first, easing later. Feeling cold. Maximum temperature 4 °C.

Outlook for Friday to Sunday:

Rain, sleet and hill snow overnight into Friday. Dry, bright and rather cold by day. Chilly Saturday with rain, strong winds and hill snow. Probably drier Sunday with lighter winds.
