Met Office issue weather warning with snow forecast tonight

A yellow weather warning for ice has been issued across Merseyside by the Met Office.

The cold wintry weather will continue with rain, sleet and snow a possibility this evening.

However, tonight's clearer spells bring a risk of frost and icy patches.

A sudden stratospheric warming (SSW) has seen a rise in temperature and change in wind direction in the atmosphere high above the Arctic.

This happens at an altitude of about 30 km so has a delayed influence on weather at the earth’s surface.

The Met Office said: "A further 1-2 cm of snow is possible in a few places at first, mainly above 200 metres across Scotland, northern and central England, before residual rain, sleet and snow dies out during Thursday evening.

"Ice is then likely to form on some untreated surfaces, with difficult conditions on some roads and pavements by Friday morning."

Check the weather forecast in your area:

What to expect

  • Some injuries from slips and falls on icy surfaces
  • Probably some icy patches on some untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths

Tonight's weather warning is in place until 10am tomorrow (January 15).
