Met Office issue weather warning for wind and rain on Boxing Day as Storm Bella set to hit Greater Manchester

Storm Bella is set to bring heavy rain and strong winds to Greater Manchester on Boxing Day.

The Met Office have issued a series of weather warnings ahead of the storm's arrival on Saturday afternoon (26 December).

An amber severe weather warning has been issued for parts of south Wales and across southern England, with gusts expected to reach up to 60 to 70mph in some places.

Storm Bella is likely to bring disruption to travel and utilities, the forecaster's alert said.

In Greater Manchester, a yellow warning of rain has been issued from 6pm on Boxing Day until 9am on Sunday 27 December.

The heavy rain, combined with strong winds may lead to some travel disruption, and flooding in some places, meterologists have warned.

A yellow warning of wind is in place across the region and most of the country from 3pm on Boxing Day until 12am on 27 December.

The Met Office say there is a 'small chance' that homes and businesses could be flooded, causing damage to some buildings.

"There is a small chance of fast flowing or deep floodwater causing danger to life," they said.

"Spray and flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closure.

"There is a slight chance of power cuts and loss of other services to some homes and businesses."

Christmas Day is looking fairly settled in Greater Manchester, with a cold and frosty start and cloud building throughout the day.

Winds are set to strengthen later on in the day with outbreaks of rain overnight.

Boxing Day is set to be very windy and wet, with wind speeds expected to reach up to 45mph at their peak.

By Sunday 27 December, temperatures are expected to get colder, with wintry showers and possible snow on high ground by Monday.
