Met Office issue weather warning for 'severe thunderstorms' after weekend heatwave

A weather warning has been issued for Merseyside which could see 'severe thunderstorms' sweep across the region following this weekend's heatwave.

A yellow weather warning has been issued for Merseyside from Monday until Wednesday.

Most of the UK is also included in the warning with the entire country warned to brace for storms.

The Met Office's forecast for Merseyside reads: "There is a risk of severe thunderstorms through this period which could be interspersed with clearer and sunny spells.

"Staying warm and humid during both day and night."

The warning, covering from Monday to Wednesday next week, states: "Some places are likely to see severe thunderstorms early next week- but there is significant uncertainty in location and timing.

"There is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes and large hail.

"Where flooding or lightning strikes occur, there is a chance of delays and some cancellations to public transport.

"Spray and sudden flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and increased chance of accidents.

"There is a slight chance that power cuts could occur and other services to some homes and businesses could be lost.

"There is a small chance of fast flowing or deep floodwater causing danger to life."

Temperatures in Liverpool are set to rise into the high twenties over the weekend, as the heatwave takes hold.

Dry and sunny weather is set to dominate this weekend, but the hot weather is set to end with a series of thunderstorms, according to the Met Office.
