Met Office issue warning as thick fog to descend on Merseyside

The Met Office has issued Merseyside a yellow weather warning for thick fog.

Forecasters predict there will be thick fog in places, causing difficult, possibly dangerous, travel conditions.

They warned it could be very dense with visibility near 50 metres in places.

The fog seems likely to develop more widely during the coming hours but it is uncertain at this stage whether the same areas will be affected during the Monday morning peak travel period.

Anyone in the region should expect slower journey times by car, with delays to bus and train services possible and there is a chance of delays or cancellations to flights.

The Met Office placed the warning until 10 am Monday, November 15.

On Sunday evening, Highways England warned motorists of fog patches forming around the M6.

What should you do when driving in fog?

  • Check mirrors, then slow down as you approach
  • Maintain a greater distance between you and the car in front - the gap needs to be four seconds instead of two
  • Use your wipers to keep your windscreen demisted
  • If 'fog' is shown on a signal but the road is clear, be prepared for sudden patches of fog
  • Use your fog lights if visibility is reduced to 100 metres (328 feet)
  • Do NOT use full beam lights because fog reflects the light back and reduces your visibility further
  • Do NOT attempt to navigate using the tail lights of the car in front as this gives a false sense of security
  • If visibility is very limited, wind down your windows at junctions and crossroads to allow you to listen out for traffic
  • If you really cannot see, you should consider stopping until it is safe to continue
