Met Office issue snow warning for parts of Greater Manchester this weekend

A yellow weather warning for snow has been issued by the Met Office for parts of Greater Manchester this weekend.

Up to 10cm of the white stuff is expected to fall on higher ground.

The warning, which covers parts of Stockport and Tameside, is in place from 3am to 6pm on Saturday.

The snow may be heavy at times and could lead to travel disruption, according to the Met Office.

There is a small chance of travel delays on roads with some stranded vehicles and passengers, along with delayed or cancelled rail and air travel.

There is a slight chance that some rural communities could become cut off, forecasters warn.

And there is a small chance that power cuts will occur and other services, such as mobile phone coverage, may be affected.

Earlier today, the Met Office issued a yellow weather warning for rain.

Heavy rainfall is forecast for today until midnight tonight (Thursday).

Flood alerts are in place on the Middle River Mersey catchment including areas near Bramhall, Stockport, Sale, Altrincham and Urmston.

They are also in place in the River Bollin catchment areas included Knutsford, Wilmslow, Macclesfield and Bollington.

The yellow weather warning says that 'flooding of a few homes and businesses is likely' and that 'bus and train services probably affected with journey times taking longer'.

Spray and flooding on roads will probably making journey times longer, say forecasters.

The Met Office website states: "Further rain moves into all areas during the evening, falling heavily at times and being confined to northern areas by the early hours. Showers will cross southern counties before dawn. Minimum temperature 2 °C."
