Met Office issue severe wind warning with travel disruption expected

Monster gales are set to batter parts of the UK this weekend - with travel disruption expected and loss of power feared.

Yellow weather warnings have been issued today by Met Office for sections of Scotland, including Central, Tayside and Fife, Grampian and the Highlands.

The west to northwesterly gales will reach 80mph in the more remote areas of the country, where they'll likely be delays to road, rail, air and ferry transport all weekend.

Coastal regions, including in and around Aberdeen, will be dangerous as the winds spread and strengthen eastwards.

"In combination with high spring tides this is expected to lead to large waves around the coasts. Winds gradually easing through Sunday afternoon," the Met Office says.

"Strengthening west to northwesterly winds will bring gusts of 60-70 mph, perhaps locally 80 mph, to exposed locations of northern and eastern Scotland.

"These very strong winds likely to result in some travel disruption and dangerous coastal conditions across northern and eastern Scotland."

It's believed bus and train services will be affected, with some journeys taking longer.

They'll also be delays for high-sided vehicles on exposed routes and bridges and some short term loss of power and other services, Met Office warns.

Coastal routes, sea fronts and coastal communities will be affected by spray and large waves.

There will also be showers throughout Saturday across Scotland.

Firework displays tonight may be in jeopardy due to the weather.

But nine out of 10 people want fireworks to be banned from public sale anyway, according to a poll. Concerns for pets, such as dogs, were raised in the survey.

It will also be windy across northern England today, but calmer further south.

Cloud and rain will clear across southern UK this afternoon.

But scattered showers will persist in northwest Scotland, Northern Ireland and prts of northwest England.

It'll be dry elsewhere, but windy with severe gales across far north.
