Met Office issue Edinburgh a yellow weather warning as gale force winds hit city

The Met Office has warned that severe weather is set to descend on Edinburgh.

From Friday November 26, a yellow weather warning has been issued to Edinburgh as wintry and blustery conditions could cause disruption.

Although there are sunny intervals throughout the weekend, the yellow weather warning is in place from 12pm on Friday straight through to 6pm on Saturday.

With heavy rain expected from 12am on Saturday morning, the Met Office is currently forecasting winds of up to 36 miles per hour on Friday but will rise into the 40s and hitting a maximum of 48 mph by 3am on Saturday morning.

By 9am on Saturday, winds will still be strong at 38 mph and by 6pm will die down to 29.

A yellow weather warning for strong winds gives caution that locals should expect disruption - commuters should expect delays to road, rail, air and ferry transport.

The Met Office also warns that there could be some damage to buildings such as tiles getting blown off rooftops.

There is also a small chance that power cuts may occur as gusts are expected to reach 48mph on Saturday morning.

The Met Office's outlook for Friday through to Sunday is: "Rain clearing south on Friday morning but showers turning wintry behind. Becoming very windy later and this continuing on Saturday morning, severe gales possible in east. Drier and brighter Sunday."

By Sunday, it is expected that the gale force winds will clear but with that comes freezing temperatures.

From 9am on Sunday, Edinburgh locals can expect a very crisp winter's day as temperatures will sit at 0 degrees but the Met Office warns that it will feel like -4 and will only reach 2 degrees maximum. Sunshine is forecasted to break through the cloud from as early as 9am.

Looking forward to the following week, the Met Office expects the more strong winds to come in up to the north and north west of the UK, along with wintry conditions.

For Sunday November 28-December 7, the Met Office say: "A more settled day on Sunday with rain and strong winds clearing to the southeast and followed by drier and brighter interludes but remaining cold with patchy frost and ice as well as some hill snow. Some scattered showers could affect eastern coastal districts.

"Then becoming largely unsettled through this period with rain and strong winds often moving in from the west or northwest. Some brighter and drier spells are likely especially in the south and southeast. Windy with the risk of gales at times, especially in the north and northwest. Temperatures will be milder than of late in the south but remaining mostly rather cold in the north with a risk of hill snow as well as frost and ice."
