Met Office issue danger to life amber weather warning with flooding forecast in deluge

Parts of Greater Manchester could be hit by flooding as torrential downpours are set to hit the region.

It comes as the Met Office issued an amber weather warning for rain from 6am on Tuesday to 23.59pm on Wednesday.

Heavy rainfall combined with some snow melting across the hills is likely to lead to flooding in some areas, the forecaster said.

The Met Office said people can expect homes and businesses to be flooded, causing damage to some buildings.

Fast flowing or deep floodwater is likely, causing danger to life, and spray and flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and road closures in some places.

"There is a good chance some communities could be cut off by flooded roads," the forecaster said.

"Power cuts and loss of other services to some homes and businesses likely."

The whole of Greater Manchester is covered by the amber-coded weather warning, alongside parts of Cheshire, Lancashire, and Yorkshire.

Pennine and High Peak areas are believed to be at most risk of flooding, but not exclusively.

Local weather sources have said that around two inches of rain is likely to fall across the region between Tuesday and Thursday next week.

The Environment hasn't issued any flood warnings for the Greater Manchester area as of yet.

Two flood 'alerts' were in force last Thursday (14 January) after hours of heavy rainfall overnight.

It warned of 'possible' flooding around the area of the middle River Mersey catchment area, including areas near Bramhall in Stockport, Sale, Altrincham and Urmston.

Since then, rain has continued to fall sporadically across the region.

The rest of today and Monday is expected to remain fairly settled, with slightly milder temperatures than seen in previous days.

Temperatures could rise to double figures in Greater Manchester on Tuesday, with a maximum temperature of 10°C expected.

"Persistent heavy rain will continue through Tuesday and Wednesday, with strong winds in southern areas on Tuesday," the Met Office said.

"Brighter on Thursday, with wintry showers and a risk of ice."
