Met Office issue Boxing Day weather warning and say travel could be disrupted across England

Greater Manchester is set to be battered by strong winds on Boxing Day.

The Met Office have issued a yellow warning of wind from 3pm on Saturday 26 until 12am on Sunday 27 December.

Meteorologists have warned the extreme weather could affect road, rail, air and ferry services, with longer journey times and cancellations likely.

"Some roads and bridges may close, and power cuts may occur with the potential to affect other services, such as mobile phone coverage," the Met Office said.

"Injuries and danger to life could occur from large waves and beach material being thrown onto sea fronts, coastal roads and properties."

"Some damage to buildings, such as tiles blown from roofs could happen," the weather site added.

The region could see wind speeds of around 13 to 22mph, with gusts ranging up to 44mph on Boxing Day afternoon.

Across Greater Manchester, the weather forecast for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day looks fairly unsettled, with some sunny spells and rain showers.

Tonight, rain is expected to continue through the evening and will remain cold and windy, with a minimum temperature of -2°C in some places.

Christmas Eve is expected to be mostly bright with lots of sunny spells. Temperatures are due to be colder than recent days and frosty overnight.

The maximum temperature on December 24 is 5°C.

Christmas Day is likely to bring rain showers, with more rain expected to arrive through the night, becoming heavy at times on Boxing Day.

There could also be some snow on higher ground.

A yellow warning of rain is currently in place for parts of London and the Midlands from 6am today, until 2am tomorrow.
