Met Office hour by hour weather forecast for Wales as wind and rain batters the country

The new year has already seen a very wintery start in Wales as temperatures dropped and snow lined some parts of the country.

Hail, snow, and "scattered wintry flurries" fell in parts of the country earlier this week with weather warnings issued as temperatures plunged below zero in some parts.

But as the country enters the weekend heavy rain will be the primary weather concern, with up to 16 mm of rain water expected to fall in an hour in some parts of the county.

The Met Office forecast for Wales on Saturday reads: "A cloudy, wet, and windy day as a band of rain, heavy at times, clears east followed by showers through the afternoon, these blustery with risk of hail and thunder. Mild to start but feeling cooler after the rain clears. Maximum temperature 11 °C.

"Scattered showers continuing overnight, with further risk of hail and thunder. Some clear spells in between and a grass frost developing. Feeling cold in the ongoing brisk winds. Minimum temperature 0 °C."

For Sunday the forecast reads: "Further showers to start on Sunday, heavy at times in the morning. These gradually fading and winds easing from the afternoon onwards, but rain pushes into the southwest later. Maximum temperature 9 °C. "

Here is your hour-by-hour forecast as snow, wind and rain batter the country.

Saturday January 8

10am

It'll be a wet start to the weekend with heavy rain expected in most parts of Wales. However, the temperature will have thawed from previous days with highs in some areas reaching 11°C.

Most of the country can expect around 6 - 8 mm of rainfall within the hour, with higher ground likely to see more.

12pm

The heavy rain will remain in most areas into the afternoon, however it turn to lighter showers as it is pushed westbound.

Temperatures will still remain mild for most at around the 10°C mark. Wind will be a concern to some, with gusts of 33mph in some coastal areas.

2pm

Almost all of Wales will be much dryer into the afternoon, with scattered rain expected on higher ground.

Cardiff will see some sun breaking through, with the temperature remaining at around 10°C. In Swansea, the afternoon will be dry and mild.

4pm

With much of the country now set to see light showers for the rest of the afternoon, some areas of Carmarthenshire will draw the short straw with heavy rain still set to batter areas such as Llandovery.

Up to 32mm of rain can be expected within the hour here, with strong winds also in place.

6pm

After a few hours of dry weather, some areas of Wales will once again see patchy rain into the evening. However, it is set to be much lighter than the heavy showers earlier in the day.

Temperatures start to drop as the evening sets in with Cardiff seeing 6°C, Aberystwyth 7°C, and Monmouth 5°C.

8pm

Saturday night will once again be a rainy one for some, with showers forecast over Swansea and much of east Wales.

Monmouthshire will be one of the coldest areas of the country as the temperature drops to 4°C.

10pm

Late into the evening and overnight will be dry but cold for most. Frost could be expected on Sunday morning, especially across colder regions of the country. The strong winds are also expected to subside in most parts.

Cardiff and Swansea will drop to 5°C, Newport will be 4°C.
