Met Office heavy rain warning for the North East extended for another day

The Met Office weather warning for heavy rain in the North East has been extended for an extra day.

The yellow warning is now in place from 6pm on Tuesday until 12pm on Thursday.

Forecasters have warned of a week of wintry weather for much of the region.

The warning covers all areas of the North East including Newcastle, Gateshead, Northumberland, Sunderland and County Durham.

The warning states: "Following earlier heavy snowfall, a period of heavy rain late Tuesday and overnight into early Wednesday will lead to a relatively rapid thaw.

"The combination of rain and melting snow may lead to some flooding.

"Further persistent, sometimes heavy rain is likely later Wednesday and into Thursday particularly in northeast England and North Yorkshire."

On Tuesday the region awoke to a dusting of snow, while heavy rain fell across lower areas.

A number of bus services across County Durham were disrupted as a result of the weather.

An amber weather warning for snow has been issued which covers higher areas of Northumberland and County Durham.

What to expect

  • Spray and flooding on roads probably making journey times longer
  • Bus and train services probably affected with journey times taking longer
  • Flooding of a few homes and businesses is possible
