Met Office has its say on whether the North East will see snow this weekend

It is unlikely that the North East will get any of the snow forecast for some parts of the UK this weekend.

The Met Office revealed on Wednesday that northern areas of the country could be in for some snow towards the end of the week as temperatures plummet.

But meteorologist Luke Miall said the North East was unlikely to have any over the coming days.

He said: "The snow is mostly going to be for northern and western areas of Scotland in the form of showers.

"If the North East gets anything it will be in the form of sleet on the higher ground on Sunday morning."

The North East is set to have a mixed bag over the weekend with a dry start but with more rain and wind heading into Sunday.

Temperatures are expected to range from highs of 8C to a minimum of 1C.

Mr Miall said: "On Saturday the region is looking fairly quiet to start the day with. There will be some low cloud and some fog around.

"There will be some sunny spells as the afternoon goes on. We will see the cloud thicken and there will be outbreaks of rain but it will mostly be dry.

"That rain coming south will remain through the night and the first part of Sunday with the possibility of sleet on the higher ground.

"Sunday looks to be a bit of a blustery day with some steady showers. The wind will gradually strengthen and it will be wet and windy heading into the start of next week."

Outlook for Friday to Sunday

Mainly cloudy on Friday and Saturday with occasional drizzle, especially on hills with fog. Locally bright.

Winds strengthening on Saturday, then rain early Sunday. Brighter, fresher later Sunday with showers.
