Met Office gives fresh hope of perfect bank holiday weekend

The Met Office has responded to rumours that another heatwave will "blast" the UK at the end of August.

Stephen Dixon, a weather expert, has said that while the country is in for a "settled and fine" bank holiday weekend, an air mass from the east will stop us sizzling.

The forecaster at the Met Office explained: "From tomorrow (Thursday, August 26) we will see some fine and sunny spells in the west of the country. This is due to a high-pressure system sitting over the UK at the minute.

"And that will continue into the weekend, with just a few patches of cloud in the south.

"However, temperatures will remain in the low 20s or high teens, as a weather pattern from Scandinavian cools the eastern coast of England, and keeps those temperatures subdued."

He added that, for a warm spell to be called a "heatwave", temperatures in Bristol would need to reach 26C three days running.

It is actually Scotland that will bear the brunt of the current high-pressure system over the country, Mr Dixon explained, with Glasgow set to reach 26C today (Wednesday, August 25).

Saying that, this weekend the mercury is set to peak at a balmy 23C in Bristol on Sunday (August 29).

The warm weather will last into Monday, with no rain forecast, Stephen said.

Next week, as September begins, temperatures will remain in the low 20s as the Scandinavian air mass continues to keep a heatwave from forming.

This may continue into the following week, beginning Monday, September 6, or become more unsettled.

Mr Dixon explained that "confidence was low" when looking that far ahead, but there were "some signals" that the warm and sunny spells would last into the middle of next month.

For now, though, we can expect a "settled and fine" bank holiday weekend, with no prospect of rain, he said.
