Met Office forecasts sun and highs of 18°C after weekend washout

After a washout of a weekend and dreary start to the week, the weather is set to improve this week.

Temperatures are set to leap from below to above average as ex-Hurricane Sam pushes an area of high pressure towards the UK, meaning temperatures could be 18°C or above when the sun shines.

It was about about two degrees above average in September, but temperatures took a tumble at the end of last week.

The Met Office has issued a weather warning for heavy rain and high winds in a large part of Wales on Monday night into Tuesday morning. You can read more about that here.

But Met Office forecaster Nick Miller said: "There is a change in the flavour of the autumn weather. Temperatures took a dip last week, and they start this week a little below average for the time of year.

"But a big change going through the week with warmer colours coming back and the temperatures will leap to above average, but not necessarily with lots of sunshine.

"It's all down to a change in the position of the jet stream as ex-Hurricane Sam misses the UK well to the north west, but will build a ridge in the jet stream that will allow high pressure to move in, meaning it will turn drier and warmer. There will be some mist and fog around too."

Presenting the forecast for the week, the forecaster said that high pressure is starting to "nudge in" on Wednesday.

"There will be more in the way of sunshine and it will be drier, " he said. "Thursday will be largely dry, mainly in Wales and the west, with some patchy spells of sun shining through. It will be very similar on Friday.

"The pattern doesn't change much. Temperatures could be close to 20°C in the sunny spots."

The Met Office long range forecast for the UK from Friday, October 8, to Sunday, October 17, shows that the more settled weather might last for Wales, with temperatures expected to be above average for the time of year.

It said: " Later into next week, cloudy conditions are expected with occasional rain that is at times prolonged and heavy across western Scotland and Northern Ireland accompanied by strong winds across northwestern coasts.

"Elsewhere, dry with variable cloud and some clear and sunny spells, with the most sun in southern and southeastern areas.

"In addition, light winds will allow for some patchy fog to develop overnight which may locally be slow to clear. Temperatures are expected to be above average through this period. Into the following week, this northwest-southeast regime is likely to persist, with any spells of rain and potentially strong winds to the northwest.

"Drier and more settled elsewhere, however, there is a likelihood of some slight showers affecting areas further southeast with temperatures also returning to nearer average."
