Met Office forecasts plummeting temperatures as UK hit by Arctic winds

Temperatures are set to plummet this weekend as the clocks go forward to mark the start of spring. The Met Office says that Arctic winds will bring a spell of colder weather to the weekend.

The clocks go forward on Sunday by one hour allowing for more daylight in the evenings and the mornings. On the first day of spring – also known as the vernal equinox – the UK is said to have 12 hours of daylight and 12 hours of darkness. Read more about the clock change here.

The Met Office forecast for Sunday says that the weather will remain "unsettled with showers and sunny spells". Forecasters are also saying there could be "frosty" starts in Wales on Monday and Tuesday. The forecast adds; "It will be largely dry and bright until rain arrives later Tuesday."

BBC Weather's UK forecast says: "A colder turn will come on Sunday when showers over Scotland and high ground in northern England could become wintry as wind flows veer northwest or northerly. Winds should drop on Sunday night as a high pressure ridge moves across the UK and frost will become more likely in many areas."

They have added that the "cold won't last long". Their forecast for the start of next week says: "Northerly flows will soon get cut off next week as Atlantic low pressure systems return to bring milder, unsettled conditions; but the first band of rain moving across the UK early in the week could be preceded by a short-lived period of snow over high ground in northern areas.

"It looks like being a similar week to this week with further bands of rain interspersed with brighter showery interludes. Some heavy downpours are likely with further risks of hail and thunderstorms and winds will occasionally be strong and gusty. Rainfall amounts could be well above normal so there will be flooding threats." They say that temperatures will be near or above average but next week could see some "chillier and drier" weather that could bring wintry showers to northern Scotland.
