Met Office forecasts heavy downpours and strong winds to hit Bristol, Somerset and Gloucestershire

There will be widespread downpours during Thursday morning's school run across Bristol, Somerset and Gloucestershire according to the Met Office.

The forecaster predicts showers which get heavier throughout the morning causing up to 6mm of rain per hour.

Things are set to brighten up in the afternoon with a dry and even sunny evening predicted across the region tomorrow.

Temperatures will get up to around 19C during the day and will likely remain in double figures overnight.

The weather is then set to be fine and dry across the South West on Friday ahead of a sunnier abielt cooler weekend.

According to the Met Office, the first of Thursday's rain will set in from 6am reaching its heaviest by 10am.

That rain will pass through Somerset and Gloucester by midday but are likely to continue in Bristol until the early afternoon.

There will also be gusts of up to 25mph during the worst of the downpours.

Today

A dry start for most before cloud and rain arrives in the west by mid-morning. The rain pushes eastwards slowly through the afternoon lingering in the west into the evening. Many eastern areas are likely to see some dry interludes. Maximum temperature 20C.

Tonight

The patchy rain lingers in the south during the first part of the night before a fresh band of rain arrives in the west during the early hours. Minimum temperature 15C.

Thursday

A cloudy and wet start in the west on Thursday. The rain will progress eastwards during the day. Turning drier for most by the evening. Maximum temperature 20C.

Outlook for Friday to Sunday

Breezy with further cloud and rain on Friday. Turning drier and brighter on Saturday although feeling cool. Sunday is likely to be cloudy with showers and some brighter spells.
