Met Office forecasts freezing snap for Wales with -2C temperatures

It seems as though the winter is not done with Wales yet with temperatures set to drop below freezing in parts of the country this week.

Despite a stormy start to the year, and with spring fast approaching, Wales will still have to undergo a few more weeks of cold weather as temperatures drop to -2°C.

Parts of the UK could see snow, however this is looking increasingly unlikely for Wales despite the bitterly cold snap.

The good news is that despite the drop in temperature, high pressure over the UK will mean that the weekend should be "dry and bright".

Unsurprisingly, higher ground will see the coldest temperatures dropping to -2°C in St Asaph and Bala on Sunday night into the early hours of Monday morning.

And while the rest of Wales might not be quite as cold, most of the country will remain around 0 to 1°C in the early hours of Monday with highs of 3°C in Pembrokeshire.

On Monday night into Tuesday, much of the country will still be feeling the cold - experiencing temperatures of around 0°C - however, this will thaw slightly as the week progresses.

Fortunately, the days will be much warmer than the nights with temperatures even reaching highs of 9°C in parts of the country.

Wind will return towards the end of the week - albeit nothing like we have seen in recent weeks - as will some rain.

The Met Office forecast for this week:

Sunday night:

Any showers will fade away to leave a dry night with occasional clear spells. Breezy near the coasts, with a frost developing in many inland areas by morning. Minimum temperature -2 °C.

Monday:

After a cold start Monday will be a dry, bright and breezy day. The best of the sunshine will be in sheltered parts of the north and west. Maximum temperature 9 °C.

Outlook for Tuesday to Thursday:

Often cloudy on Tuesday and Wednesday with only a few bright spells and some patchy light rain in places. Cloudy with strong winds on Thursday, with further rain at times.

UK long range weather forecast

Thursday March 10 - Saturday March 19

A windy start to this period for many, especially in the north and west with some coastal gales. Outbreaks of rain are likely for some western areas, becoming persistent and heaviest over south facing hills; generally drier in the east with variable cloud and some sunshine, though some rain is possible here too.

Temperatures are expected to be mostly near normal to rather mild. Through the rest of the period, frontal systems push eastwards which are likely to bring strengthening winds and rain, with a chance of some snowfall.

The main impacts are likely to be from heavy rain and gales during this time. Clearer weather, with showers, may reach all areas by the end of this period.

Speaking to WalesOnline this week about the upcoming possibility of snow across Wales Met Office forecaster Aiden McGivern said: "For next week, there are two camps basically - one really quite cold and one, much milder. It's the milder ones that a moment is supported by more computer model runs, and as a result, it looks more likely.

"So, the most likely scenario for next week is that after a cold snap at the start of the week, it then turns milder once again, with a return to wind and rain from the Atlantic. But as that clashes with the cold air, there is always the chance of a brief spell of snow on the leading edge especially over hills around central parts of the UK

"But you wouldn't discount the less likely outcome. It's still possible that it will turn even colder through next week staying mostly dry because of the influence of high pressure to the east, but with snow flurries likely especially around eastern and southern coasts. That's less likely, but not impossible."
