Met Office forecasts blustery wintry showers at the weekend after snow falls in North East

The North East looks set for more cold weather and wintry conditions over the weekend.

According to leading meteorologists the Met Office, high winds are set to be accompanied by freezing temperatures in the region.

This comes after snowfall was recorded in parts of County Durham, most notably at Newton Aycliffe as a cold snap looks set to continue into next week.

According to the forecasters, the conditions for leading into the weekend will be characterised by chilly temperatures and showers which could turn into sleet, snow and hail.

The Met Office said the weather should be as follows: "Brighter but colder, in sunshine and isolated blustery showers, with the cold accentuated by the wind. The showers will comprise a little sleet, snow and hail, this mainly affecting hills. Maximum temperature 6C."

As for the rest of the weekend, moving into next week, the North East looks set for further wintry conditions with snow possible alongside wintry showers.

The Met Office have outlined the following forecast for Saturday to Monday: "Changeable and rather windy through this period, with gales at times. Blustery wintry showers are possible in colder interludes, perhaps with some hill snow Sunday. Monday perhaps brightest."
