Met Office forecasts bitter winds and freezing showers after Wales gets sprinkling of snow

There was a sprinkling of snow in parts of Wales last night as temperatures plummeted to sub-zero degrees, with more bitter winds and freezing showers expected this week.

It snowed overnight on Saturday in Powys as a band of sleet and hill snow swept eastwards across south Wales, leaving many hill tops covered in white.

Elsewhere, there was heavy rain leaving some rivers swollen. There are currently eight flood alerts in place in Wales, as a combination of high river levels and tidal conditions mean flooding is possible.

The Met Office issued a yellow ice warning for Wales on Saturday, which was expected to last until Sunday morning, and the cold snap looks set to last into the early part of the week, with overnight frosts forecast in rural areas until at least Wednesday.

Sunday will initially start dry and sunny, but by afternoon more blustery showers will arrive into the southwest. Coastal areas and the Welsh hills will be affected by gales and temperatures will struggle to rise above seven degrees.

Overnight, scattered showers will affect most places and temperatures will hover just above freezing.

Any showers on Monday morning will give way to a dry and sunny end to the day, leading to a widespread frost after dark.

It is forecast to be a similar picture for the first half of the week, which is forecast to be mostly dry and sunny, with overnight frosts.

By Wednesday, it will turn warmer, with a risk of coastal gales and rain spreading in to all parts.
