Met Office forecasting highs of 14°C in December as high pressure takes control

Wales has been battered by Storm Arwen and Storm Barra in less than two weeks - but the weather is to become more settled next week and temperatures are set to rise.

The Met Office 10-day is showing that after rain over the weekend in parts of Wales, it will become more settled from the middle of next week.

It is set to become drier with temperatures rising to as high as 14°C in parts - more than double the average for December., and it could be here for Christmas and beyond.

Welsh weather forecaster Derek Brockway says: "Signs of drier, more settled weather from mid month and over Christmas possibly lasting into the start of January. High pressure in winter brings a risk of fog and frost."

Met Office forecaster Aidan McGivern, who presented the 10-day forecast, says: "The good news is, that in the next 10 days, the weather is set to turn more settled as higher pressure builds.

"It will turn increasingly mild as we go into the weekend and the start of next week. It will be very mild in the south and west of the UK on Sunday with temperatures of 14°C, and it is going to remain mild into the middle of next week.

"High pressure will increasingly build to the south of the country, helping to settle things down across southern areas. Towards the end of next week, there is a strong signal the high pressure will gradually build further north across the country.

"We will lose the strong south-westerly winds, and that means that temperatures might return closer to normal, but nothing cold in the forecast yet. It will bring more widely, dry and settled weather as we end next week."

The Met Office forecasts for Wales for the rest of the week says: "Bright with sunshine and a few short-lived blustery showers, these briefly heavy with a little hail possible and perhaps wintry over the highest ground. Feeling cold in brisk north-westerly winds. Maximum temperature 8 °C.

"Cold at first on Saturday, but turning mild and cloudy with rain spreading east. Patchy rain on Sunday with a chance of heavier rain on Monday. Staying mild."
