Saturday is forecast to be the best day of the weekend with sunny spells expected after a morning of rain showers.

Sunday will be a much wetter affair with rain expected for much of the day, with the potential for very heavy showers.

The unsettled theme is set to continue into next week with rain expected all day on Monday and temperatures in single figures.

The Met Office forecast for the entire North West said: "On Saturday the band of rain will clear eastwards through the morning this will be followed by a mixture of sunshine and showers, heaviest in the far west. Maximum temperature 13 °C.

"The outlook for Sunday to Tuesday is staying unsettled throughout the period, with further rain, heavy at times, interspersed with some drier and sunnier spells. Often windy, and feeling cold."

The BBC forecast for the North West said: "On Saturday morning any overnight rain should soon clear to the east, leaving plenty of sunshine for the rest of the day. Largely dry too, just a chance of the odd scattered sharp shower.

"On Sunday, a deep area of low pressure may bring outbreaks of heavy rain during the morning, followed by sunny spells and blustery showers. Turning breezy.

"Monday will also be an unsettled and very windy day, with further outbreaks of rain and blustery showers likely at times. Tuesday see further sharp showers, but also some sunny spells at times. Becoming cooler."
