Pensioners and people with underlying health conditions were urged to keep their heating on to at least 18C following a weather warning for plummeting temperatures.
The UK Health Security Agency and The Met Office predicted that a cold snap will hit England between 6pm on February 5 and 6pm on Tuesday, with widespread frost and temperatures set to plummet to around minus 3C in rural areas.

The official Met Office forecast for Sunday is: "After a widespread frost on Sunday morning, the day should be dry and mainly bright, with some patchy cloud. Light winds easing through the day. Maximum temperature 7 °C."
The outlook for Monday to Wednesday is: "Another widespread frost on Monday morning, before becoming cloudier and breezier during the afternoon. Milder and cloudier on Tuesday, perhaps some patchy rain and drizzle. Clearer and drier on Wednesday."
