Met Office forecast for April cools down 28C heatwave claims

You may have seen reports of a mid-April heatwave heading to the UK in the middle of April, but don't get too excited yet.

The Met Office's forecast for the middle next month does not bring quite the same level of hope for a heatwave, not that it sounds bad, either. According to the Met Office's forecast for early to mid-April, Britain can expect "temperatures most likely close to or slightly above average" between March 30 and April 13, which is the longest range forecast the Met Office publishes.

The Evening Standard reported comments from an independent meteorologist, Jim Dale. Mr Dale, the founder of British Weather Services, said he "wouldn’t be surprised to see 26C, 27C, 28C in the middle of April" as he predicted hot weather to come "fairly early".

But the UK's official national weather service blows a breeze on those claims. This is what the Met Office says for April 2022, in its long range forecast running up to the middle of the month.

"Conditions are likely to become more changeable during this period with spells of drier weather interspersed with showers or longer periods of rainfall. This rainfall will probably be highest in the west and northwestern areas with drier weather on average in the southeast. Periods of strong winds are also likely, especially across the north. Temperatures most likely close to or slightly above average."

Met Office forecasters have predicted 2022 to be one of the warmest years on record, but say it will still be cooler than recent years since 2015.
